Harvard's Museums - A Short History
1866 The Peabody Museum founded
1889 Museum of the Ancient Near East (founded as the Semitic Museum). Name changed in 2020
1895 Fogg Art Museum established
1903 The Busch-Reisinger Museum founded as the Germanic Museum.
1985 The Sackler Museum established.
1984 Harvard Art Museums (established as umbrella for three art Museums) founded this year.
1984 Museum of Scientific Instruments founded
1998 Peabody Museum of Ethnology and Archaeology established as separate collection.
1998 Museum of Natural History (Herbaria, the Mineralogical & Geological Museum, and the Museum of Comparative Zoology)
2014 Ethelbert Cooper Gallery.

About Us
This is project is being spearheaded by Professor Suzanne Preston Blier and students. Prof. Blier is the Allen Whitehill Clowes Professor of Fine Arts and of African and African American Studies at Harvard. She an Art Historian who specializes in the art and architecture of Africa who holds positions in both History of Art and Architecture Department and the African and African American Studies Department at Harvard University.
